Oaklawn Flower House Poem & Mural (2024)

Mural Artist: Kiersten Williams

Poet: Jenni Proctor

Medium: Wood Panels

Location: Oaklawn Garden, 7831 Poplar Pike, Germantown, TN 38138

As part of the 2024 Word Travels Biennale Sidewalk Poetry Contest, Jenni Proctor’s winning poem Bathed in Elegance was selected for installation at Oaklawn Gardens—one of Germantown’s most beloved historic landmarks. Centered on the theme of “Transitions,” the poem reflects the vivid transformation of spring, when the world bursts from monochrome into color and life.

Inspired by Proctor’s words, Memphis artist Kiersten Williams created three vibrant floral murals that beautifully merge art, poetry, and place. Her colorful designs appear to bloom from Oaklawn’s windows and shutters, honoring the site’s legacy as a flower farm while maintaining its historic charm through the use of removable panels.

This collaborative installation celebrates Germantown’s literary and artistic communities, offering residents and visitors a unique way to experience the power of poetry and visual art while deepening their connection to the cultural spirit of Oaklawn Gardens.

This project is funded by the Mitch Major Word Travels Memorial Fund
